Karel Hynek Mácha: May / Aleš Najbrt

Galerie Zdeněk Sklenář in Prague published this fine-press volume containing calligraphic works by Aleš Najbrt in 2022. The book is modelled after the 1956 edition of May, for which the painter Zdeněk Sklenář designed the binding, graphics, and layout, and which Karel Janský subsequently prepared for publication by the State Publishing House of Beautiful Literature, Music, and Art (the Skvosty/Treasures Series).
The 2022 fine-press publication was published in a print run of sixty copies signed by Aleš Najbrt and numbered 1 to 60.
Although the twenty-six year old Karel Hynek Mácha (1810–1836) self-published May almost 190 years ago, today he is considered to be the founding father of Czech modern poetry, and May is considered to be one of the most beautiful poems as well as the peak work of Czech Romantism. It has become one of the most frequently published works in the Czech Republic. The timeless lyrical content of this dramatic poem continues to attract and inspire readers, not only because it is a celebration of love and nature, but also because it raises questions about the purpose of life and death and all human uncertainties and adversities. Over the years, it has been illustrated by prominent artists, such as František Kobliha, Jan Zrzavý, Toyen, Jindřich Štyrský, Zdeněk Sklenář, Jaroslav Šerých to name but a few. This year, their ranks were joined by the graphic designer Aleš Najbrt, who has been collaborating with Galerie Zdeněk Sklenář for many years.
